new electrically operated Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGC). The first lot of 06 nos. of RTGCs is expected to arrive at JNPT in July2017 and second batch of 09 nos. of RTGCs will follow. With the augmentation of these RTGCs, 06nos old RTGCs will be replaced and fleet strength of RTGCs in JNPCT will become 27nos. (15 New + 12 existing). These RTGCs are electrically powered as against the conventional diesel engine powered, which will become cost economical as well as less maintenance and environment friendly. These new e-RTGCs will have two twin twenty container handling mechanism with 50MT capacity under spreader (as against 40MT with single lift of existing RTGCs).

These new RTGCs will help in improving the container handling in the yard and supporting the vessel operation in improving the terminal productivity. There will be indirect job generation in the associated EXIM trade due to the induction of these new RTGCs, as there will be requirement of additional Tractor Trailer drivers, surveyors, vessel/ shipping agents, Custom House agents etc.
