Although two extensions were approved, arguing that there was a need for more time, companies APM Terminals B.V., Terminal Investment Limited, S.A (The Netherlands); Terminal Link (France) and PSA International Pte. Ltd (Singapore) did not participate in a project that would benefit the transshipment of cargo in the Pacific Ocean of Panama and would generate more than 25 million dollars to the economy.
Since the Panama Canal Authority received no reply, it added in the statement that “it will continue with its constitutional responsibility to seek an increasingly profitable operation, through a commercial development strategy that will generate conditions to benefit the country. ”
Pending of the extension for a tender, the Port of Corozal Oeste project is increasingly far from being started.
Since the construction of the port was proposed several problems have arisen. The complaint of people living in the area, mainly because of the environmental impact that construction can generate, has become the main point of incongruity between citizens and the Panama Canal Authority.
The company that is willing to deal with this contract not only must address the complaints of citizens but also the 19 legal obstacles to its construction, among which is an approval by the Supreme Court of Justice.
Without an open tender agreement, the Corozal Port project remains in limbo.
