Chittagong maritime port reached a new high in container handling according to the latest survey of Lloyd’s List, a UK-based maritime classification society.
The port has moved up five spots and was ranked 71st among the 100 busiest container-handling maritime ports around the world.
In the survey, the maritime ports around the world were ranked based on the number of containers they handled in 2016.
The world’s oldest journal on port and shipping published the 2017 edition of the Lloyd’s List’s One Hundred Container Ports on Monday.
Chittagong port handled 23,46,909 TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units) – a unit which is used to describe the capacity of container ships and container terminals – of containers in 2016; 20,24,207 TEUs in 2015; 17,31,219 TEUs in 2014; 15,41,517 TEUs in 2013; 14,06,456 TEUs in 2012 and 13,92,104 TEUs in 2011.

According to the Lloyd’s List, the premier maritime port of the country was ranked 76th in 2016, 87th in 2015, 86th in 2014 and 90th in 2013.
As per the list, Chinese port Shanghai with total throughput of 37.13 million TEUs in 2016 clinched the top position this year, while 20 others Chinese ports are placed on the list.
Port of Singapore secured the second position on the chart.
